The problem is with IR2BT. It affects all remotes.

I haven't checked to see what the new firmware provides, but why not just avoid installing the new FW? Does the PS3 force the update if you have an internet connection? Guess I'll find out tonight when I mess around with it!
This might sound weird, but I wonder if there is another power up command or sequence that could be sent from the remote that wouldn't cause this.

So, you will never update the PS3 ever again? That doesn't sound like a very good idea...

Nope -- I've tried them all.

The 2.40 firmware provides new functionality around in-game XMB. For online gaming, you are required to update to the latest firmware in order to play.

I meant for the short term until more is known about the issue and if it can be resolved.
Shouldn't Sony be somewhat required to fix this since Bluetooth is a "standard"? You shouldn't have to re-pair devices everytime power is cycled with said device. Saying that, I expect NOTHING from that company...

Read that there is a new function in 2.40:
"You can now turn off the PS3™ system from the XMB™ screen using the [Turn Off System] option."
Wondering if that could not be part of what caused the problem??
see link for 2.4 improvements:

Why would Sony have to fix something that made a third party device non-functional?

Just stating that based on Bluetooth being a generic communication standard, that's all. I really don't think they have any real requirement to take action.

As long as you power up the PS3 using some other method (i.e., front panel button or game controller) the IR2BT continues to work fine for everything else I've tried -- including the power down function through the IR2BT. Which means I can still use my Harmony 880 remote for normal Blu-Ray viewing.
It is highly unlikely that the "turn off system" option added into the XMB has anything to do with this problem.
At a guess, it is something related to how the Controller Port Assignment is re-confirmed while the PS3 powers up or some such -- which would make it a problem that likely has to be fixed in the IR2BT itself, but we really should give Bruce the time he needs to diagnose and track down the root cause. The workaround -- keeping the wireless game control handy just for the power up process, or powering the PS3 up by inserting a disc or using its front panel button -- is just not that painful while we await news from Bruce.
A little patience is called for here.

From initial testing, we've pretty much confirmed what Bob Pariseau has stated (so I'll borrow most of his excellent wording).
If you power UP the PS3 via the IR2BT, the PS3 will not respond to the IR2BT commands.
If you power down the PS3 (by ANY means, including the IR2BT) and power it up again using either its front panel button or the game controller (either tethered via USB cable or wireless via BlueTooth), the IR2BT works FINE!
Apparently some change in V2.40 causes the PS3 to not recognize the IR2BT commands, but ONLY when the IR2BT is the controller used to power UP the PS3.
FOR NOW, the workaround is to power UP the PS3 by some other means (front panel button or game controller). The IR2BT will work fine for all commands including Power OFF.
ThyMaster has a good suggestion to avoid accidentally powering on using the IR2BT
"I connected the USB "power cord " from the IR2BT with the PS3. Thus I avoid accidentally turning on the PS3 via IR2BT.
I will use the Sixaxis to turn the PS3 on -or- by just inserting a CD/DVD/BluRay into the slot."
So, to summarize, the CURRENT/short-term workarounds are:
1. Don't upgrade to 2.40 -OR-
2. If you do upgrade to 2.40, do not use the IR2BT to Power ON the PS3.
I'll update this thread as we find out more.
Bruce...

So, will the units be going back on sale? I PROMISE I'll turn on my ps3 by inserting a disc!
