Just disable the internet connection on the ps3-that's all I did. No more update nags. The web browser kind of sucked, and I never managed to get media streaming working right anyway, so there's no real point in having it on without the newest firmware.
unless you are an online gamer then you HAVE to update in order to play.

You mean, to play online
Besides, if you are a gamer, at least the controller will be in easy reach.

That is what I said "online gamer". I don't believe you can even play online unless you update, correct?

As amazing as this sounds, some people use he PS3 as a DVD/Blu-Ray/Media player *and* a game machine. Go figure!
I'm amazed at how short sighted some of the suggestions are here (like disabling the internet connection, and not ever updating the PS3). The updates add functionality, even with the movie playing aspects of the machine. 2.41 allows me to enable dolby pro-logic on my receiver when a DivX file has only a stereo soundtrack, for instance. Just because some of this functionality isn't important to you, it may be important to some.
And, for a game like MLB'08 The Show, if you want to download updated rosters, you need to login to the Playstation Network, and you are unable to do so until you update to the latest firmware. Avoiding updates just isn't feasible for a great many.

 Updating from 2.36 to 2.41
Hi,
There has been 1 report of someone who skipped PS3 firmware update 2.40 altogether, going from 2.36 to 2.41 where the IR2BT continues to function as normal. Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks

I went straight from 2.36 to 2.41 and it did fail as reported.

After reading through this thread I thought I would like to comment. Simply I would like to thank Bruce for a product that IMHO is simple, easy to use and program and gives all the functionality I require for my PS3. I use the PS3 mainly as a Blu-ray / DVD player in my Home Theatre setup. Until IR2BT came along I was very unhappy with the universal remote scenario and Sony's lack of respect to end users in the market not giving IR functionality, particularly when they were marketing the PS3 as one of the best Blu-ray players for your home theatre...
As an International customer, I was just glad that Bruce offered the unit worldwide. I believe the way he has handled this issue has been exemplary, and again I thank him. I would have payed twice as much for this unit to achieve what it has done for my system, even with the current "problem"
Even though the latest problem does not really affect me as I generally need to put a disc in anyway, hence that powers on the unit, I think I will take an approach I read earlier and just buy a new unit, and give the old one to a friend that will be happy to have all the other functions avaialble, particularly being able to power off.
I haven't posted here previously but have been a customer and a "guest" on this forum for awhile. Again I just thank Bruce for a great product.
Thanks[/quote]

Perhaps this whole saga might persuade Sony to implement a quick 'Unconditional Power Off' command for the IR2BT by way of recompense for the hassle that the 2.40 / 2.41 upgrades have caused Bruce and the IR2BT user community.
Even prior to the 2.40 update I found that my wife would often hit the power off button on the harmony remote and seeing that the TV had turned off would put the remote back in its cradle before the 3s power-X-X sequence had been sent - the result being a rather warm PS3 the following morning.
Fingers crossed

Every once in a while my power-off command fails. I don't know why. When it does I just happen to notice the bright blue and green LEDs on the front. And then I get up and hit the power button. The effort isn't that much. (But teaching your wife to do so might be a chore! ).
The problem I have is that my TV is currently an LCD RPTV, so once you hit the off command you really need to let it cool down before turning it back ok. So it's just easier to manually power off if I have to.
